Chapter Nine

Josiah slammed the trailer door. “What the hell was that?” he snapped at Rayna before he even flipped the switch to start the generator or turn on the lights.

She whirled on him. “Yes, what was that, Josiah? I could have gotten Shep talking, if you hadn’t pulled that possessive man stunt.”

“I didn’t say a damn word to suggest I was being possessive.” He ripped off his hat and threw it down on the bench. The very hard bench he had no intention of sleeping on again tonight. He’d be in that bed with Rayna.

“You didn’t have to. Your tone of voice told him that you disapproved of me making friends with him.” She tore off her cowgirl hat and tossed it aside too, then reached up to unlatch the gold necklace she wore. That horseshoe pendant had been skimming the top of her cleavage and tormenting the hell out of him all night.

The chain loosened around her neck, but one end caught in the underside of her hair. She tugged at it, but it didn’t come free.

“I don’t want you ‘making friends with him,’ Rayna. He’s an asshole—I told you that.”

“An asshole who might know what happened to a murdered FBI agent.” She pulled on the chain and then spun so her back was facing Josiah. “Help me. It’s stuck.”

While he worked the chain free of the tangle of her hair, he battled for some of the reason he’d managed to keep hold of all these months when it came to Agent Rayna Quinn. In only a couple days, she’d managed to throw open that window and let his good sense fly right out of it.

He tugged to free the chain from her dyed brown locks.

“Ouch!” She lifted a hand to the bruise on her head.

Remorse flooded into him. “I’m sorry, Rayna.” He separated the strands of hair more gently. When he released the necklace, he handed it to her.

“Thank you.” She closed her fingers around the jewelry. She started to turn away from him, but he settled a palm along her beautiful face and looked into her eyes.

“I’m sorry for whatever tone I used back there, Rayna.”

Her eyes widened, the depths shielding any emotion she was feeling. She kicked off her boots.

“I don’t trust the guy one bit,” he continued in an attempt to explain.

“Precisely the reason why we need to investigate him, Josiah. I thought you’d understand that. You agreed to watch my back while I dig into these people. And the minute I tried to strike a rapport with Shep, you made it clear that you’ll kick his ass and drag me out by my hair like some caveman.”

He grunted in irritation. “I’m not a caveman, Rayna. You should know better. And I agree that you need to look into Shep, and Cutter and Sutter too, but drinking from his flask and partying with him isn’t how you’ll be going about it.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “So that’s what has you so grumpy. You don’t like that I shared a flask with Shep.
