Age Differences: An Example in the Literature

Milligan and Wise (2011) provide an interesting example of the use of age differences. For Sweden and the United States, they calculated what we would refer to as α-ages using 1-year mortality rates and proportions of population with poor self-assessed health as characteristics. They looked at people who were around age 60 in the mid-1970s and computed their α-ages using corresponding characteristic schedules about 3 decades later. What they found was that the age differences (differences between α-ages and chronological ages) were larger in both countries when self-assessed poor health was used than when 1-year mortality rates were used. In particular, age differences around age 60 in the mid-1970s, using self-assessed poor health as the characteristic, were approximately 9 years using a standard from around the mid-2000s, while the comparable age differences using mortality rates were around 7 to 8 years. These figures indicate that the improvement in the health measure was slightly faster than the improvement in mortality. This is consistent with what we saw when we looked at measures of health in Chapters 6 and 7.
