SPIRITUAL DECISION PROCESS

Be a friend and be available: Pray for the person, genuinely care for him or her, and wait on God to open opportunities to spend time with him or her.

Demonstrate God’s love and power: Use spiritual gifts to demonstrate God’s love, power, and encouragement.

Explain practically: Explain the message of Jesus using one of many tools such as The Bridge, The Romans Road to Salvation, Steps to Peace with God, etc., or by using modern parables from movies. Share your own experience with Christianity.

Persuade: Since God has been already drawing this person and he or she understands Christianity, you can ask the person if he or she wants to commit their life to Christ. Then talk about what that means. Ask the person to pray and invite Jesus into his or her life.

Explanation of the Revised Addison/Engel Scale

You can nudge people closer to a new life in Jesus by using the revised Addison/Engel Scale. Once you determine where people are on the scale, you can communicate and relate to them at the level where they are. Thus, you stand a better chance of their responding positively to you, and God will use your actions to help draw them a step closer to Him.

Let’s start at the bottom of the scale.

Level 11: No belief or interest in spirituality—A person who is not interested in God or religion. [Note: The first three points apply to every level of the scale and will not be repeated in subsequent points.]

1. Be a friend, and be available for people, as God directs. Let your life be a witness to them, but don’t push your views. Pray for them, genuinely show interest, and wait for God to open opportunities to spend time with them.

2. Use spiritual gifts to demonstrate God’s love, power, and encouragement.

3. Talk at a deeper level, being sensitive to God’s leading. If conversation occurs, thoughtfully listen to them, and they will listen to you.

4. Limit how far you go with conversations, unless God leads you further.

5. Don’t take rejection personally.

Level 10: Awareness of spirituality—A person who might believe in God but whose views of God may vary. He or she is often open to all gods. [1, 2, and 3]

4. He/she is usually much more open to talking about spirituality and the supernatural.

Level 9: No effective knowledge of Christianity—A person who is open to God and to Jesus but who may view Him as a teacher or prophet.

4. He or she may ask questions, but be careful to avoid overwhelming him/her, because he/she probably doesn’t understand as much as you may think.

Level 8: Initial awareness of Christianity—A person who may have grown up around church or had Christian family members. He or she has basic knowledge but lacks understanding. He or she may never have had a spiritual awakening or may have been hurt by a Christian or by a previous church experience.
