CHAPTER 21

In her hotel room, Diane sought her husband’s comfort. “I’m a mess. How can you be so calm?”

Liam stretched out on the bed while thumbing the television’s remote controller. “It’s a guy thing. I’m probably a bigger mess, but I’m better at fooling myself.”

She unbuttoned her blouse, folded it on the dresser, and placed it in her dirty laundry drawer. Dry skin compelled her to scratch under the strap of her tank top undershirt. “I have to agree, emphatically, caveman.”

“No need to be rude.”

“That wasn’t rude. I think I’m jealous.”

“Understandable. Emotions can get messy, especially for women.”

“Don’t be sexist.”

“It’s true. Women are better communicators thanks to their sensitivity. Men are better hunters thanks to our insensitivity. I’m just going with your caveman comment.”

“Whatever.”

“And with you being a hypersensitive empath, I can see your emotions affecting you.”

“Yeah. I said I was a mess.”

“I mean all the time.”

She faced him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re an empath, and you’re a woman. You’re supposed to be sensitive all the time. You can’t turn it off, I guess.”

“Keep labeling me and see how long your marriage lasts.”

“Sorry. I’m trying to be… um… empathetic?”

“At least you’re trying, I guess. But you’re right. I am very sensitive. That gives you a great opportunity to comfort your wife and talk about what’s bothering me.”

“Huh? No, there’s a basketball game on now.”

“Since when do you like basketball?”

“Since I said I’d consider moving to the States with you.”

She started pacing in front of the bed. “Okay, let’s talk about that.”

“Talk about what?”

“Moving to the States.”

He grimaced. “No. We agreed to live in Ireland while we figure things out.”

“I’ve got images of a nun being tortured in my head. I’d like to talk about anything else, like where we’re going to live.”

“Not tonight. We’ve already agreed to being messes. Let’s do something less mentally strenuous.”

Fatigued, she backed off. “Okay. Like what?”

“Um, you could watch the game with me.”

She wondered if all newlywed husbands were so awkward. “Seriously? Come on! When’s the last time I did anything to make you think I liked sports?”

“Well, never. But I figured you never played sports because you’ve got the dexterity of a pregnant three-legged rhino. I didn’t think you really disliked sports.”

“What did you just call me? What sort of rhino?”

“I was trying to get your mind off… stuff. Get serious. Do you really not like basketball? It should be a good game.”

She stopped walking, faced him, and jabbed her fists into her hips. “I don’t like sports, and I don’t like TV.”

“TV’s relaxing, and that’s just what you need.”

Warming up to the idea of vegetating with him, since a soothing conversation seemed beyond his skill, she started pacing again. “I’d be willing to watch a romantic comedy movie.”

“Hell, no!”

“You get a choice. We can keep talking, or we can watch a movie of my choice.”

As she’d hoped, the decision weighed on his tightening shoulders. “Um, if we talk, can I watch the game afterwards?”

She shrugged. “Sure.”

“But we can’t talk all night.” He lowered his voice to a deep tone, a trait she normally found sexy, but not tonight.
