I tried to make my backpack something we could grab and run if the situation called for it. I didn’t know how computer-savvy the Big Bad and his army were, but I figured we were on the run from now on, so cash would be better than credit cards, and I shouldn’t bring any electronics. Not that I’d ever gotten my cell phone back.

I was also getting the impression we would be using the sketchiest truckers and private planes to hitchhike from place to place. The stuff normal parents would warn their kids to never do.

I packed the essentials, like a toothbrush, underwear, a pair of shorts, some shirts, a dress…I hesitated at the photo album, knowing I wanted to bring it, but it was too heavy to be worth it if they made me walk for days, which sounded like a possibility. My blankie, however, I packed. It was the size of a scarf, so I could justify it as something to keep me warm in the cargo hold, or in case we had to sleep outside. The truth was that Deanna was right, and I couldn’t bear to leave it behind when I had no clue where I was going or when I would be back.
