CHAPTER

Twelve

WE MUST have fallen asleep, because I was suddenly jerked awake. For a moment, I had no idea where I was, or what had woken me. Then I saw Morgan, fast asleep, his head on the pillow next to me. I automatically reached out to touch him. He sighed and snuggled into the pillow, but didn’t wake.

Then I realised what had woken me was my mobile. It was ringing in the pocket of my jeans which were... somewhere.

Morgan and I were still tangled together, and separating wasn’t as easy as might be expected because we were literally stuck to each other. Morgan muttered and stirred, and eventually rolled away from me, still not waking. I took time to pull up the covers and tuck them around his naked body before I slipped out of bed. The action was not entirely altruistic as I would never be able to have a coherent conversation with anyone whilst gazing on perfection.

The ringing stopped as I was fishing the phone out of my pocket: typical. I groaned when I saw the call was from Cory. Shit! I was supposed to have been there by now, wherever ‘there’ was. I quickly called back, and wandered over to the window while the phone rang the other end.

“Where the fuck are you?” Cory hissed without preamble.

“At Morgan’s.”

“Why are you still there? I’ve been frantic. You should have been here ages ago.”

“Yeah well... um... things are a bit more complicated than we thought.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s too late, Cory. Morgan’s father’s been giving him the drugs for weeks. He can’t leave. He needs the injections every day, or he’ll die.”

Cory swore, using words and phrases I’d never heard pass his lips before. “Hang on,” he said shortly at the end, and I was left staring out of the window, holding a silent phone to my ear for at least five minutes.

“Bring him here, quickly.”

“Cory, didn’t you hear what I told you? He can’t. He needs....”

“Just bring him here, Matthew. We can handle it. You have to get him out of there before his father arrives today. He’ll know by now what we’ve done and he’ll kill Morgan if he thinks there’s any chance we can get to him. I’ll explain everything when you get here only please, Matthew, please get out of there... right now.”

“All right, all right, calm down.” I forgot to lower my voice and heard Morgan stir behind me. “Cory, just calm down and I’ll see what I can do.”

“No! Don’t ‘see what you can do’. Get out of there now. If he finds you there, he’ll kill you too. He won’t let you leave because he knows you’re my friend. Please, Matthew. Please. Just get out of there. If Morgan won’t go so be it, but just leave. Leave right now.”

“All right already, I get the message.”

“Matthew?” Morgan’s sleepy voice spun me around. I smiled and waved to him, indicating I wouldn’t be long.

“No, you don’t. I’m not joking, Matthew, really. You’re in danger. You’re both in danger.
