3.2.5 Semi-functional prototype showing details of a Lorgnette concept as redefined into a contemporary style. Note the careful attention to detail with respect to the thong, Chinese button knots and jewel elements. Designer: Mak Mun Yin

This solution concept is also a timely reminder about the need for learner designers to progressively read up on the history of design, for example, the work of Heskett [102], Fry, [103 ], Collins [104 ], Thackara [105 ] and Dormer [106 ]. The extensive historical information described in such references, apart from being important in helping one to appreciate the influence of design on culture and technology, can also be used to identify consumer values and to inform the design process. Examples of the latter effect can be seen in the retro design of certain products, such as in the case of some motor vehicles (e.g., the classic VW Beetle) and, of course, the Lorgnette in Figure 3.2.5. This retro approach is where historical forms are deliberately incorporated in the form language of contemporary designs in such a way, or with such modifications, as to enable visual and tactile connections to be easily made to analogous features in the historical product that was once highly valued by consumers, and that will continue to be so valued in the future. Continuing on, designer Mun Yin’s typical user scenario is shown in Figure 3.2.6 and her technical drawings are depicted in Figure 3.2.7.
