After a great deal of coaxing, Dom had gotten Eija to lie down on the sofa with him. The fatigue in her eyes had been clear since he walked in, but sheâd stayed up to spend time with him despite his unexpected late-night visit. Heâd half expected to walk in and find her with a man, and heâd fully expected to throw the man off the balcony if that had happened.
Sometime between a show that interviewed people whoâd grown up with killers and another one recounting a detectiveâs past cases, sheâd fallen asleep. As tired as he was, he stayed awake to watch her sleep. He wanted to hear her breathe, see her chest moving with each deep inhale and exhale.
Heâd never been what some would consider a womanizer. He loved women and enjoyed their company, but he didnât see fucking oneâor as many as possibleâas some sort of conquest. First love had come in the form of Ivy Lawrence, who heâd met his senior year of high school. Last heâd heard, sheâd gone on to work in some genetics lab, dodging the bullet that would have shattered her life if theyâd stayed together. While sheâd been researching cures, heâd invested money during the day and carried out for-hire contracts at night.
So, he had no problem admitting to himself that he was into Eija. Whenever they spent time together, he walked away feeling better than good, and that she was the same fucking amazing person heâd met in Grenada didnât help how badly he wanted her in every way and position imaginable.
âEija?â He stroked her arm. âEija, come on. Letâs go to bed.â
She grumbled something, folded his hand against her chest, and went back to sleep.
âAll right. Fine.â
He eased up off the couch, lifted her clean off the cushions, and walked them back to her bedroom, the towel falling off on the way. Both their places had the same layout, so heâd known where the bathroom was even before sheâd told him.
âDom.â She groaned and let her head fall back. âIâve already seen your muscles. Put me down before you hurt yourself.â
âYouâre not heavy.â He set her on the bed and climbed over her. âIâll grab my clothes from the dryer and go. Iâll lock up, okay?â
âNo. Stay. You left me in Grenada, so you owe me a night here. Plus,â she yawned and gave his body a quick, sleepy scan, âI donât know the entire story, but youâve had a hard night. I can tell. Let me hold you.â
He laughed. âThink thatâs supposed to be the other way around.â
âNot really. Just as much as I like your arms around me,â she yawned again, âyou like my arms around you. At least, thatâs what the hundreds of men Iâve slept with have told me.â
He smacked her on the ass. âKeep fucking around and see what happens.â
âOkay.â She grinned. âI will.â
She raised the covers, and he got in beside her. Instantly, the warmth of her body soothed his muscles and loosened the tension that had been docked in his chest all night.
