Chapter Eleven

The ambulance rushed away with a scream of its sirens. The beat cops who were on scene turned to Aspen one more time.

“And you never saw his face?” Officer Kathleen O’Reilly asked her.

“No, I was upstairs.” She pointed to her window and kept her voice steady as she added, “I looked down, and I saw Mr. Eros heading into the alley. He was followed by a man in a black ski mask.”

“A man with a knife.” The red-haired male in uniform rocked forward onto the balls of his feet. Officer Tommy Coggs. “You said you saw a knife.”

“I said I thought I saw the glint of what could have been a knife.” She’d been over this several times already. Her story hadn’t changed. It wouldn’t. “The man appeared well-built, muscled. Looked fairly tall, maybe a few inches over six feet. He was wearing black pants, a black sweatshirt, and gloves. I didn’t see his face. Didn’t glimpse his hair.” She could only shake her head. “There is very little else that I can offer here.”

Tommy nodded. “Probably a robbery,” he figured as he looked back at his partner.

“Uh, the vic was Jake Eros,” Kathleen pointed out.

Tommy nodded. “Yep, that’s his name.”

“You don’t rob Jake Eros.” Obviously, Kathleen was far more informed than the male cop. But Aspen had already pegged him as being new to the area, anyway. Kathleen continued with a grim air, “This won’t end well. Someone will want payback.”

Someone already did want payback. “If that’s all, I need to go.” The cops had already talked to Gideon, and he was waiting for Aspen near his truck. He and Elijah were speaking quietly to each other, and she wanted to find out what the hell they were saying.

She also wanted to see if Gideon had learned anything about the perp that he hadn’t shared with the uniformed cops.

“Sure, go ahead,” Tommy directed her.

She gave the cops a tight smile, then hurried toward Gideon. Was it her imagination or did he stiffen as she approached? And what was up with the shadows that she could see in his eyes?

He and Elijah also immediately stopped talking when she joined them.

So she blurted, “You saved Jake’s life.”

“Nah,” Gideon’s immediate denial. All casual. Like they were just talking about the weather. “You’re the one who saw what was happening. If it weren’t for you, Eros could be dead in that alley.”

Because the attacker had run away. Had he been scared off when he heard Gideon’s approach?

“Figure Jake Eros owes you both,” Elijah added with a small inclination of his head. “Think he’ll be feeling generous once the docs finish sewing him up?”

“Jake isn’t the generous type,” she replied in a low voice. “He’s more the type to take everything that he can as he lets the world burn around him.”

“Is that right?” Gideon’s voice still seemed way too casual. “You and Jake go back far?”

“Far enough.” She’d almost told Gideon everything about Jake in her office, and she wanted to tell him more, but on the street, with cops nearby? Not the best place for those confessions.
