4. The new butterfly’s wings are still crumpled up.

In seconds the butterfly popped out.

It used its new long, thin legs to walk up the stick. At first, its wings were crumpled. They quickly expanded as the butterfly pumped blood into the veins of each wing. In a few minutes the wings were full, revealing their bright colors. I was happy to see the butterfly fly off.

5. The anise swallowtail butterfly makes its first flight to some backyard plants.

The butterfly will use its bright colors to attract a mate. Together they will produce eggs, which will hatch into more caterpillars. And those caterpillars will eat, grow, and then—presto change-o—more butterflies will appear!
