Chapter 13
Cool, nighttime wind caressed my cheeks when we stepped through the double doors of the healing center to the outside. Loganâs friends seemed intent on not letting a moment of silence pass. If one wasnât asking me what I thought of the headquarters, then the others were relaying stories of missions theyâd gone on and near-death experiences theyâd dodged.
Some of their tales kept my attention, which I supposed was the entire reason they were telling them.
But every now and then, one of them would glance anxiously at Logan.
Logan still walked ahead of us, and he still refused to talk. His broad shoulders blocked my view of the barracks, and stiffness that hadnât been there earlier marred his gait. Even the beautiful night sky and the peaceful calm of the outdoors didnât lighten the mood.
âThis is us,â Brodie said a moment later, giving Logan another anxious side-eye.
Weâd reached the barracks, and Brodie waved at the first door into the building. Similar to dorm buildings at colleges, the barracks looked like an apartment complex. They each stood three stories high and were dotted with windows, the brick exterior contrasting with the concrete buildings behind us.
Brodie reached for the door handle. âYou two ⦠uh ⦠turning in for the night too?â
Logan nodded curtly.
I cocked my head. âSo youâre not going to the bars tonight, Brodie?â
Brodie raised a blond eyebrow. âThatâs where Iâd be right now if you hadnât tried to kill somebody.â As soon as he uttered the joke, he gave Logan another anxious look, but Loganâs attention was focused on something in the distance, as if he wasnât even listening to us.
I offered a genuine smile. âSorry to ruin your plans.â
Brodieâs shoulders relaxed a little before he winked. âDonât be. This was more exciting, anyway.â He dipped his head before he turned and strolled inside.
âGoodnight, Daria. See you tomorrow.â Jake handed over my bags, which heâd insisted on carrying the entire way, before giving Logan a wide berth.
Alexander pushed his glasses up his nose but also kept a few feet of distance between himself and my boyfriend. âNight.â
After the three of them disappeared, Logan finally waved to the other end of the barracks, coming out of whatever trance heâd been in. âI live down there.â
âYou donât live with those three?â
He shook his head. âDominant wolves get their own living space.â
Why am I not surprised?
We resumed walking, and the silence stretched between us. All that did was remind me that I was still getting to know Logan. Heâd never mentioned before that he was dominant over his friends, and I still didnât really know who Crystal was, other than someone from back home.
I frowned. Although, it seemed pretty obvious Crystal was his exâan ex who still had it bad for him. Since everyone kept mentioning her, I wondered if their breakup was fresh, or if theyâd been really serious at one point. And given the text I saw from her the previous monthâthe text in which sheâd stated that she missed him and wondered when he could callâI had a feeling she wanted to get back together with him.
