As the doorbell rang in Merrymopes, another bell rang inside a cubicle of a different kind: a Society cubicle laced with different offerings. Tilly had decided to balance Katie’s intuition with a little help from familiar guides. She’d waited for the others to enter their cubicles, hovering until the last moment before stepping to the other side.

Drawing a few supportive looks from familiar Society figures, Tilly waited for a vacant cubicle, hoping her intuition would serve her well. She’d been keen to support Katie, conscious of the need to maintain cohesion within the group — the very thing threatening to unravel as the days passed.

The ‘Olin thing’ was building … a symbol of subtle divisions forming among the classmates … small things leading to tensions that often played out in training exercises … Leah flying at Olin before the small boy with a gift for sorcery got his own back. The two had made up now, but it had left Tilly with a vision of things to come … when friendships faded as they sensed glory on the horizon.

Glory had a certain ring to it, Tilly decided, more certain of where she belonged now. She may have been pressured to sign up, but she’d decided to make the most of it, knowing that, deep down, she wanted to graduate as much as anyone else.

As a cubicle door opened, Tilly stepped in, closing the door behind her. Unlike the above-ground ones on the other side of Helping Hand, no one re-appeared from Society cubicles, leaving non-magical folk to create narratives of hidden floors underground where desperate people went for help.

There was some truth in this theory, mainly the desperate part, because a Society member making a trip to Sad Souls was in desperate need of remedy. Rehabilitation was the name of the game in the land of giants … the process used to transform magicians into Melackin … punishment for going astray.

Hoping this never happened to her, Tilly rang the brass bell, feeling her penchant bracelet vibrate as she did … the sight of a Scribberal appearing in the wood panelling a sign she’d chosen wisely: the main communication device within the S.P.M.A.

Tilly placed her note in the silver box, closing the lid and moving the lever to the right, waiting for the faint sound of a brass bell to ring … the signal someone had responded. A response would generate a reflection in the mirror … the sign of welcome required to journey on.

Tilly’s thinking was simple: if Katie was wrong they’d have little time to consider alternatives, so familiar guides would be called upon — the words Jocelyn used on their return from Sorelel’s Circle. Lots of people had guided them so far, but something told Tilly Jacob and Jocelyn weren’t going to descend into ‘the white storm’ with them, leaving her to ponder the other players involved in training the young: sky urchins and Ulux.

Although sky urchins were ever present in The Cendryll, the scar-ravaged creatures appeared when intensity was needed, racing Tom back to The Hallowed Lawn a case in point.
