Chapter 9

Dean groaned silently to himself as Poppy practically bounded across the room to the little table in the corner. He couldn't believe how sexy the man's fucking bounce was—or his naiveté.

Poppy really knew nothing of the world. He didn't even know what a refrigerator was. He had so much to learn and it looked like Dean was going to be the one teaching him. Oh man, the poor little guy was doomed.

Dean finished grabbing the stuff out of the fridge that he would need for scrambled eggs. He bumped the door with his hip and closed it then walked over to where Poppy was sitting, happily munching on another piece of watermelon.

The second he was within reach, Poppy held out another piece. Dean took it, not because he loved watermelon, but because Poppy seemed concerned that he eat. It was actually kind of refreshing to have someone worry about him—and a little strange. He wasn't used to it.

"There's a trick to making good eggs, Poppy," Dean said as he started cracking eggs into a bowl. After he had added several eggs, he picked up a fork and started whipping the eggs together. "If you whip them too fast, they go flat. If you whip them too slow, they don't mix properly."

Poppy seemed to watch what Dean was doing with rapt attention, nodding like he understood. Dean knew he didn't. He handed the bowl and fork over to Poppy. "Here, you try it."

"Me, Master?"

"Yes, you." Dean grinned. "How else are you going to learn if you don't try it yourself?"

Poppy seemed a little hesitant as he reached for the bowl and then the fork. He kept casting worried looks up at Dean as he started whipping the fork around in the bowl. After a moment his tongue came out from between his lips and his concentration centered on what he was doing.

It was absolutely adorable.

"Now," Dean said once the eggs had been whipped sufficiently, "we cook them in a pan." He grabbed the bowl from Poppy and started toward the stove. "Bring the cheese, Poppy."

Dean was halfway across the room before he realized that Poppy wasn't with him. He glanced back to see him staring at the items on the table in bewilderment. "The small bag of little orange strips, Poppy."

God, Poppy didn't even know what shredded cheese looked like. Dean was going to need help. There was no way that he could do this on his own. He didn't believe Poppy was dumb by any means. He just didn't know anything. It was like he had grown up in a bubble.

Or a cage.

Dean set the bowl on the counter and grabbed a small frying pan just as Poppy came over with the bag of shredded cheese. Dean dropped a pat of butter into the pan and waited for it to heat up.

He smiled when Poppy turned the bag of cheese over and over in his hands, looking through the clear plastic. "Cheese comes in many forms, Poppy. Some comes in a block, some comes shredded into small pieces.
