Segar’s Bluto from the “Thimble Theatre” comic strip from 1932 is pictured on the left as compared to Ralph Stein and Bill Zaboly’s version on the right from a 1959 strip sequence.

Due to the lack of research on the Syndicate’s part, Sagendorf was allowed to use the image of the bully but not his name. A brute looking a lot like the guy Popeye was punching on the small screen appeared in “Popeye” #40, 1957. In the story, “The Mystery of the Magic Flute,” the Sea Hag says to one of her evil spies, “Now bring in the big guy that hates Popeye.” The big guy shows up, looking like Bluto but we never read his name in this story. In several comic book stories, this “big guy who hates Popeye” would be on the scene, referred to as “Olive’s new boyfriend” or he would go unnamed.
