5 Take a Break

The museum's 1st-floor inner courtyard, roofed with slanting glass and dotted with olive trees and marble benches, is a lovely spot. Bring your own picnic or order sandwiches at the cafe (11:30am to 6:30pm; mains $9 to $13).

Matchbox Pizza beckons nearby with crisp-crust pie and craft brews.

O’Keeffe, Hopper & Folk Art

The American Experience gallery (1st floor) hangs blockbusters such as Georgia O’Keeffe’s flowery pink Manhattan and Edward Hopper’s trapped woman in Cape Cod Morning. The nearby folk-art gallery holds a vivid collection, especially artwork by African American artists. Look for James Hampton's exquisite, foil-made throne. It's the only piece the artist ever made, a masterwork that took 14 years.
