As if to reward those who venture this far up the Aventine Hill, the minuscule Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta holds an intriguing attraction: the imposing doorway to the Priory of the Knights of Malta is kept firmly closed to the public, but you can peek through the keyhole for a perfectly framed, dead-ahead view of St Peter’s: the work of Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

The working-class neighbourhood of Testaccio was for many years synonymous with its slaughterhouse, or mattatoio. In recent years the area has become gentrified, and is best known for its clubs. For a taste of old Testaccio, head for one of the district’s many restaurants; this is the best place in town to sample traditional cucina povera– offal-heavy “poor cuisine”, best sampled at Checchino dal 1887. Testaccio’s historic market (Mon–Sat 7am–3.30pm) occupies an airy space between Via Galvani and Via Alessandro Volta, and is a great place to pick up a picnic lunch. Restoration of the old slaughterhouse – the Mattatoio – at Piazza Giustiniani 4 has recently been completed and the structure now houses innovative exhibitions of contemporary art (Tues–Sun 2–8pm; tickets around €6; mattatoioroma.it).
