Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Sha Tin, exit down the ramp, follow the road around to the left and take the first right to the end, where you’ll find a sign and footpath for the monastery.Daily 10am–5pm.Free.MAP

The recently renovated Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery dates from the 1960s, and looks down over Sha Tin from Po Fook Hill. Four hundred steep steps ascend to the monastery from behind the Grand Central Plaza Shopping Centre, lined by five hundred life-sized, gilded statues of Buddhist saints. The main hall has an undistinguished exterior but houses thirteen thousand small black-and-gold Buddha statues, each sculpted in a different posture, lining the walls to a height of 10m or more. The building also contains the embalmed and gilded body of a monk, the founder of the monastery. Outside on the terrace there’s a small pagoda, along with some brightly painted concrete statues of Chinese deities. Vegetarian lunches are also available, either from the menu or from a better-value canteen selection.
