Of the four species of metal-tail in Ecuador, this is by far the most common and widespread. It is one of the most common hummingbirds in the highlands of Ecuador at about 2,100–3,800m elevation. It inhabits cloud forest and in particular forest-edge habitats, as well as more open, scrubby areas, wherever there are flowering trees and shrubs. The male has a rich copper-coloured tail and is generally only moderately iridescent, but has a brighter glittering throat. The female (depicted) is a pale buffish colour below with a white spot behind the eye. The bird’s bill is short and straight.
