NAME. The name Islam literally means "submission," and thus a Muslim is "one who submits to God." This is the selfdesignation of the religion, and it is always appropriate. You should avoid archaic Western expressions such as "Muhammadanism" and "Mahometism" because to a Muslim these terms imply that they worship Muhammad as God-a notion they heartily reject.

NUMBERS AND DISTRIBUTION. There are about 1.3 billion Muslims in the world today. Of those, between five and seven million live in the United States. Islam is represented all over the globe. Even though we tend to associate it with the Middle East, the largest Muslim populations are in Asia. Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India have sizable Muslim populations.
