Chapter Seven

THE FULL MOON slanted its milky rays across the duvet in Jeff and Pamela’s bedroom, dappling the patterned fabric with eerie light. Jeff lay, wakeful in the semi-darkness, trying to think of a way of finding Pamela.

He felt angry that she had chosen to run away rather than confront their problems, and his anger compounded his misery. Conveniently putting aside the fact that he had been the one to cause those problems, he battered down his pillow and turned over, determined to get some sleep. He’d never felt so wretched and depressed, and he did not like the feeling. Damn Pamela and her childish temper – he wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of lying sleepless for another whole night!

As if she’d know. The absurdity of his anger made him sigh. Dragging her nightdress over to his pillow so that he could sleep with his cheek against it, Jeff closed his eyes. If only she’d ring again – how could he be sure that she was safe? That nothing had happened to her? Eventually, through sheer exhaustion, he fell asleep.

In his dreams he found himself walking through a garden. It was the kind of garden where one could get lost, where huge, rolling lawns merged with secret gardens and shady bowers, and the spreading branches of mature trees provided shelter from the sun.

It was summertime and the sickly-sweet scent of honeysuckle was heavy on the air. Birdsong, constant, yet not too close, provided background music as he walked along the mosaic-laid stone pathway.

He was looking for something. There was a horrible, sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, as if he had lost something valuable, yet he knew that, if he hurried, he might find it still.

‘Pamela?’ His voice seemed loud on the clear, still air, even though he had not raised it.

Looking around, he saw that he was completely alone in the garden, not a single breath disturbed the peace except his own. She had to be here, somewhere.

At the bottom of the lawn there was a rickety, white-painted gate with an arch which was almost completely covered with dog rose. Jeff felt drawn to the gateway, if only because he could not see any other way that she could have gone.

As soon as he stepped through the gate, he heard her laughter drifting on the warm, sweet-scented air. He smiled, his heart lifting at the sound, and his step quickened. Beyond the gate the garden was a maze of winding paths and tall shrubs and hedges. Jeff began to run, round and round in ever decreasing circles.

Pausing as he reached the centre of the spiral, he felt himself tremble, putting off the moment when he would round the corner and see her, like a child who leaves the biggest present under the Christmas tree until last.

As he stepped forward, he saw her at once. She was wearing a bright, buttercup yellow sundress with a full, billowing skirt, the kind of style his mother would have
