“Perfect.” Alice snorted and went looking for her panties, turning away from Damien. She started lifting the couch cushions. “You should talk about perfection. Gorgeous and smart—a fertility specialist for crying out loud. What am I supposed to do with that?”

“It’s always been an interest of mine. I was a test-tube baby myself. I don't understand why you have a problem with what I do.”

Alice stood straight again, whirling on him. She steeled herself not to be affected by the confused hurt on his face. “The reason my marriage broke down was because I wanted a baby and Cal didn’t.”

Damn. Alice wrapped her arms around her stomach, regretting the admission.

Damien sighed. “Oh, honey.”

“Don’t call me that.” She wished she could take those words back too because she kind of loved the way he called her honey. Loved even more the way his eyes melted when he did it. “It’s a little ironic, isn’t it? The first guy I sleep with since my marriage is totally pro-baby-making.”

He picked up a few of her things from the floor and brought them back to the couch. He sat in front of her on the sofa and gently lifted one of her legs until her foot rested between his thighs. He began to slide her silk stocking over her foot, up her calf. “I am that. I won’t lie about it.”

His hands stroking over her leg had her insides melting again, enough that her defenses fell a little more. “That’s what Cal did. He lied. When we got married he said he wanted children one day and then…well, he admitted finally he didn’t after all. I couldn’t stop wanting a family so I walked away. Silly me, I didn’t take into account I’m already thirty-four. By the time I meet someone suitable, fall in love, get a house together…heck, it’ll probably be too late for babies by then anyway.”

“Of course it won’t be. There’s time.”

Alice twisted her lips. “You would say that, Dr. Fertility.”

He cocked his head. “So I know what I’m talking about.”

Damien set her stockinged foot on the floor before lifting her other leg. He began smoothing the matching stocking over it. Alice trembled with sheer pleasure at his touch, at the capability in his hands. When he looked up and caught her gaze, desire began to pulse inside her again.

“For the record,” he murmured. “I want them. Children.”

Of course he did. He wouldn’t be perfect if he didn't. Alice groaned when he pulled the stocking to her mid-thigh, letting his fingers trail over her flesh. “This is so unfair. I was supposed to be going for a simple test run with some man who didn’t matter. Who I’d forget again quickly. I wasn’t supposed to meet you.”

“But we did meet.” He moved his hand upward until his fingers trailed through the curls covering her folds. “And we’re well matched. Why can’t we explore that?”

“Because you want me to give away all my power. Just like before.”

“No, not like before. I don’t want to take power away from you, I want to share it.
