Chapter 7

Elizabeth stood by a mountain stream Thursday evening, collecting water in her bucket so the group could boil some acorns for dinner. She and the rest of the Project Adventure members had spent the afternoon trying to catch fish with their bare hands. Gary and Kate had done most of the fishing on Tuesday. For the first time since she'd gotten to the mountains, Elizabeth had managed to catch a fish herself.

She shuddered slightly, recalling the slimy feel of the fish's skin as she worked her hands slowly toward its head and grasped it behind the gills the way Gary had shown them. Still, she couldn't help feeling a surge of pride that she'd managed to catch one of the slippery creatures. Today she and Gary were the only ones in the group who had.

Once she had collected the water, she stopped to watch the sun as it dropped slowly behind the mountains in a splash of pink and lavender clouds. It's so beautiful here, she thought. So peaceful But behind the peace and calm was the niggling feeling of dread. Sure, she could fish with her bare hands and set up a camp, and she knew how to find her way by following the stars or the sun. She even knew how to hunt wild animals if necessary.

But tomorrow was the group's solo night, and she knew that as soon as her solo was over, she'd have to return to Sweet Valley and face Devon and Todd. The thought of doing that seemed more challenging than anything she'd faced so far.

Making her way back to camp in the dusky light, she found the group working around the campfire.

At the sight of her new friends joking and laughing together as they worked, Elizabeth's feelings of nervous confusion faded. No matter what happened back in Sweet Valley, this would be an experience she'd never forget, with people she would always remember. "Here's the water!" she called out cheerfully as she entered the camp.

Ginny smiled, wiping her hands on her jeans. "Great," she said. "Nothing like boiled acorns and ferns to get a camper's blood racing, hey, Liz?"

Elizabeth smiled. "I'm hungry enough to eat a bear," she replied.

Dory laughed. "As long as you don't expect me to help you catch him," she joked.

Elizabeth grinned and poured the water into a tin pot Gary had hung over the fire.

"We'll boil the plant food first," Gary told the group, "then fry up the fish."

"Sounds good to me," Matt said as he finished peeling an acorn.

"In the meantime," Gary added, "let's talk about our solos."

There was a general groan from the group. "Do we have to?" Margaret asked. "I kind of like the group part of this adventure."

Gary smiled. "Me too," he told her. "But to graduate Project Adventure, you'll need to spend a night in the wilderness on your own. It's part of the deal," he reminded her.

Margaret sighed. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," she said. She leaned closer to him. "I won't tell if you don't," she whispered loudly.
