Back home, I make my way to the mansion’s library where I know Elias and Cain will be waiting for me. I’ve texted them both to meet me there but have left the details about the warlock’s death out of the message. Some things are just better left said in person, and discussing our next move with Aria wasn’t something I wanted to type out. Especially when Elias was known for rarely ever carrying his phone. The man spends most of his days running naked through the woods, after all.

Once Cain saw the text, there was no doubt he’d find Elias and bring him along. This was important. For us all.

I still haven’t told anyone about Maverick’s note or Lucifer’s ridiculous kill request, and part of me feels guilty for keeping it from them, but the other part feels like they don’t need to know. I’m not taking the deal, so what does it matter? Cain never wants to hear anything damning about his siblings anyway, even from me, and I’d rather not deal with his wrath or excuses. It just isn’t worth it.

Now my focus is on Aria, and what I’ve found—well, didn’t find—while at her apartment. Without the warlock to question or any of Aria’s birth paperwork left behind, we’re on our own to figure out what the next step is going to be.

I find Cain and Elias right where I need them.

Cain looks anxious already, and for him, that means short-tempered. He stands in the center of the library, arms crossed and lips pressed in a tight line. “What is it? What did you find?”

Elias is more bored than anything else. He’s in one of the reading chairs, legs spread wide and picking twigs out of his hair. “This better be good.”

“The warlock is dead,” I reply bluntly. “Ramos and I found him strangled with his eyes gouged out.”

As expected, neither Cain nor Elias are moved by the man’s death. They wait for me to continue to the more important parts.

“The place was ransacked. Papers all over the floor, all of them pertaining to Aria in some way, shape, or fashion. But the ones we needed were gone.”

“What do you mean, gone?” Cain asks. “No birth certificate? Nothing with a mention of her parents or a last name?”

I shake my head. “Not a damn thing. We’ll have to find another way. Maybe we can contact a previous foster family?” I reach into my jacket and pull out all the papers I collected at the apartment, just in case something could be of use. Passing them over to Cain, I say, “There’s a police report in there, too. Maybe we can call in some favors at Glenside’s precinct and pull some strings there.”

Cain quickly flips through the stack. “We may have to.”

“So wait. Someone killed the warlock to get information on Aria?” Elias sits up, suddenly interested.

“I would assume they got the information before they killed him, but yes. It seems to be that way.”

Elias snorts in annoyance.

As usual, Cain’s deep in his thoughts.
