In October, we left Taylor’s parents and flew to Iowa to drop Jovie off with my parents. Then Taylor and I got back on a plane and flew to Ecuador for a financial independence retreat with some of the most innovative and well-known minds in the personal finance world.

The original reason we had booked the trip was to film interviews for the documentary. Unfortunately, the event organizers felt it would be too intrusive to have a film crew at the retreat, so we had to scrap that plan. However, the trip was a great way to meet more of the FIRE community (and enjoy some international travel). I was also looking forward to spending some time with Taylor that wasn’t interrupted by our work: she had been dealing with a hectic month in her job, and I had been running around like crazy trying to juggle my freelance work and the documentary.

Founded in 2013 by JL Collins of jlcollinsnh.com (famous in the FI community for his amazing Stock Series and his book, The Simple Path to Wealth), FI Chautauquas have now been hosted in Ecuador, the UK, and Greece. JL’s vision was to bring together some of the leaders of the FI community and invite a small group of his readers and listeners to enjoy a week of adventure and conversation about life, freedom, happiness, and investing. Our fellow attendees came from far and wide and included a Mustachian who worked at Google, a nurse and her husband who wrote a blog about their FIRE journey, another couple from San Diego, and a Chilean coming all the way from Dubai, to name a few!

It was surreal to be surrounded by so many of the FIRE characters who had influenced me and Taylor to make this enormous transition in our lives — such as Pete, Paula Pant (the brain behind the popular blog and podcast Afford Anything), Chad Carson (a successful real estate investor who blogs at Coach Carson), and Brandon Ganch (the blogger and podcaster at Mad Fientist). However, the key person we would learn from in Ecuador was JL.
