TEAL AND THE BOYS HAD GONE off to fish, and Shelly had already taken the canoe back to the house, which left Daniel and Lara the rowboat.

She sat directly across from him, shoulders squared, knees together, knuckles prominent where she gripped the plank seat. Her amber hair made an aureole around her serious face, wavy untamed strands of it rippling on the breeze. Brows drawn together, she stared silently at Daniel until he was glad of the rowboat, glad that he could put all his energy into pulling on the oars, the burn of his straining shoulder muscles a welcome distraction.

“This isn’t the Olympics, you know,” she said.

He grunted and put his head down and kept on rowing, blotting his mind with the rhythmic motion. When exhaustion dropped through him heavy as a stone and every cell of his body screamed for oxygen, he unclenched his hands, looked up and blinked dazedly. They’d gone far past Lara’s house, all the way to the southern end of Coppercrown Lake. Cedars, browsed ragged by deer, lined the swampy shore. Lily pads floated in water shot with shafts of the noon sun, creating in the shallows a green-gold haze that was very nearly the color of Lara’s eyes.

Her depths weren’t shallow. They were murky with doubt and fear. He couldn’t think of a way to convince her that it was safe to trust him with her heart.

“We’re at Sunfish Inlet,” Lara said calmly.

When he finally looked at her he knew that she might never say what he wanted to hear, so he surrendered to her stubbornness and his own endless need and said, “Get yourself over here.”

She notched up her stubborn chin, but a small smile twitched at the corners of her mouth. “Caveman tactics,” she said, and he speared her with one of his long caveman arms and pulled her onto his lap. She came with so little reluctance he overbalanced and suddenly they were tumbled into the flat bottom of the rowboat, laughing, his legs and her rump up in the air. His skull had rapped the bottom of the boat, but he didn’t care about anything except the delicious promise of Lara’s lips coming down on his, her breath like warm cider, her sunny outdoor woman scent sinking into his pores and her breasts—oh, man, her breasts—full and round and mashed up against his chest.

Another of the things he loved about Lara: She could be elegant, contained and sophisticated one day, fun and sexy and ready to rock ‘n’ roll the next. But still somehow contained, he thought fleetingly, as his arms went around her and she took his shirt in her fists and pushed it up around his neck, her lips fastening hotly on one of his nipples. At the rake of her teeth all
