Chapter Thirteen
Carmen and I went back the long way. We had been friends about ten years, and basically, I pretty much accepted Carmen’s faults, that is up until the time I started seeing Markie. I’m not sure exactly how the whole thing came about except that Carmen started demanding too much from me.
I’m not one to keep secrets from my close friends—that’s not my style, especially if I’ve grown to trust them. But when I started seeing Markie, frankly I didn’t want to talk about it because I was afraid I’d jinx it. Now where the hell that kind of thinking even came from, I’ll never know, because I’m not superstitious and it was usually the woman I was seeing who worried that she somehow was going to jinx things. I’d usually just sail along.
Maybe I was secretive because Markie was considered the hottest woman in town and she was interested in me. I thought she was falling head over heels for me. If that wasn’t good for my standing in the community, I don’t know what else was.
So I wanted to try to play it cool, as if seeing Markie was no big deal. She was spending all kinds of money on me, talking about how very special, how very different I was.
Playing it cool, I thought. So when Carmen started badgering me for information about what was going on between Markie and me, I just couldn’t oblige her. She wanted to know every move, every feeling. I had to create a boundary. And do you think my closest buddy Carmen was going to give me a little breathing space? No way! She was like a leech, trying to suck out every last detail.
I tried to explain that sometimes a woman needs a little time to process things herself, that it has nothing to do with best friends. But Carmen didn’t seem to hear any of that.
Or maybe the whole final falling-out was really about jealousy…
It all started the day after my second date with Markie. She had taken me to this women’s club. I don’t remember ever having had that kind of sex before. It was all pretty private, personal. And, I swear to God, I got home at two in the morning and my phone was ringing as I walked in the door.
I was pretty high. First, I had had the most incredible orgasm, and second, I was sure that Markie was starting to fall for me. She told me on the way home that she wanted me for herself, that I inspired her to act upon fantasies she had never dared dream, and that she had always envisioned finding a woman like me. She didn’t have to say those things because we had already had sex, so it wasn’t like she was trying to get me into bed. I’ve always felt that it was the “after sex” conversation that pointed in what direction the relationship was really going to head.
So the phone was ringing. Two in the morning and I’m thinking it must be some sort of an emergency.
