A cool, gentle breeze caressed my face as we stepped out of the hair and nail salon. Hollis had scheduled to take Carson for her first mani/pedi for their girls’ morning, and after our adventure at the aquarium together, Carson had requested I join them. Even when she wasn't pulling those puppy-dog eyes on me, I couldn't say no to her.

Carson wrapped her little arms around me and I hugged her back. She was a sweet little thing, though she was famous for her sassy attitude. If she didn’t grow up to be just like her Aunt Hollis, I’d eat my words. Running a hand through her springy curls as she looked up at me, I grinned at her.

“You look AH-mazing, my dear,” I praised, grasping her hand to display it in the air next to mine. We sported matching black and purple nail polish, courtesy of the manicure we’d just had done. The base coat was black, and the nail technician had painted on purple spiders, spider webs, pumpkins, and bats.

Tomorrow was Halloween, and Carson had decided on the nail design to go with the costume she’d chosen. She was going to dress up as the character she had created for the Monster Mash dance routine Hollis’s class was performing. It was going to be a busy weekend ahead of her: Halloween tomorrow and the Fall Festival on Sunday where she would perform with a bunch of other kids and adults.

“She’s going to be the best zombie basketball player ever,” Hollis agreed as she joined us on the sidewalk. “Come on, goblin, let’s get you back to your dad.”

“Bye, Bailey!” Carson called out as she followed her aunt. They were heading to meet Bryson at the building across from the bar, and I had no intention of joining them for that, so I waved my goodbye as they took the alley shortcut.

“Bye, sweetie! Can’t wait to see you in your full costume tomorrow. Make sure you stop by our candy stand outside the bar, okay?” I waved them off and started my trek to the community center. I had to make sure everything was in order for Ladies’ Night.

The walk was peaceful, the different shops decorated for Halloween bringing a sense of nostalgia. With the town being so small, it was tradition for the shops downtown to go all out for the kids and their enthusiastic adult counterparts. Fake spiderwebs graced the windows and doors, bright orange pumpkins carved in various designs rested on bales of hay, there were even a few mechanical witches, zombies, and ghosts that were on motion-sensor switches. It took me back to years of trick-or-treating with my besties, and my heart was full.

Making my way into the large hall in the community center, I was amazed at the transformation. It was the same room in which they’d hosted my welcome home party, but it looked completely different. There was a small stage with a podium situated along the far-right wall, where I would ‘showcase’ the different guys being auctioned off for dates.
