Chapter Seven

Brody staggered into town, everything spinning before his eyes. He had lost a lot of blood and had just managed the shift into man-form.

It was very late and quiet. No one on the streets. Using scent alone, he staggered to the club, desperate to find his master. On his last legs, he hit something hard, falling naked to the ground as weakness overtook him. Then he vaguely heard a sharp cry, feeling himself shaken.

“Brody?”

It was Francis. Not a voice he ever imagined he’d be so happy to hear.

All was quiet for a few seconds and then he heard thundering footsteps. He sighed, feeling his master’s hands just as everything went black.

Hugh sat in the chair, a serious headache pounding in his forehead. He’d been thinking on the whole situation for hours and he was finally starting to calm as things became clear.

Brody had an Alpha.

His father had chained him because of … what he was. Not a boy who loved men. A boy who was a … werewolf.

Hugh stroked his forehead, taking another swig from the mug of ale in his hand. The doctor had jumped back about five feet after examining Brody’s mouth and finding his full set of long canines and pointed molars.

No wonder the boy didn’t open his mouth when he smiled.

Hugh groaned. His sweet, handsome, feral boy was a werewolf. And Brody had thought he’d known; not even trying to hide it.

Luckily, the doctor had been more fascinated than scared, and he’d sworn to keep quiet, not wanting Brody to be harmed.

News had already circulated throughout Southport. Warnings of a wounded wolf on the loose, shot by a hunter with a crossbow the previous morning.

Hugh looked over at his handsome boy lying unconscious in his bed. His wound was clean and healing remarkably fast.

Another thing that had fascinated the doctor.

The man had ordered Hugh to have a plate of bloody steak awaiting the boy when he awoke. As he’d lost a lot of blood, the doctor was sure he’d heal faster on a diet of raw meat.

Eyeing the plate and sighing, Hugh rose to walk to Brody’s side, placing his palm on the boy’s cheek.

Eyelids flickered and soft brown eyes, dull but open, were staring up at him.

Hugh smiled. Werewolf or not, this was still his boy.

Brody smiled, sniffing the air. Hugh had seen him do that before but hadn’t realized, until now, that the boy was reading his scent.

“I’m sorry, Master,” he said in a weak voice. “I just … wanted to run. I didn’t mean to … cause trouble. I … I’m sorry.”

“Hush now,” said Hugh. “You need to rest and regain your strength.”

Brody tipped his head and eyed him quizzically. “You’re not angry with me?”

Hugh sighed. “Not angry. Just a little … surprised. I’m still trying to take in the whole … werewolf thing.”

Brody shot up to a sitting position, panting in pain as he narrowed his eyes. “But you knew … and I talked of … I thought you didn’t mind
