Chapter Eighteen

Brandy’s Piano Bar was already crowded when they walked in. Dale took Al by the hand and led them towards the back corner where it seemed to be less crowded. When he looked over his shoulder, he wasn’t surprised to see the crowd part for Gina, who walked in like she owned the joint.

When Gina got to where her two companions were, Dale asked Al what he’d like to drink, not bothering to ask Gina, knowing she’d want a martini. He had to raise his voice a bit, even as he leaned towards Al to be heard over the guy singing next to the piano.

Al stared at Gina a moment. “I’ll have what she’s having.”

Dale couldn’t help but laugh. “Al, I don’t know that you’re ready for that just yet. Straight vodka might just put you on your ass.”

“I think that is exactly what I want,” Al said, his eyes mere slits.

“Yeah, but my back might object when I have to carry your ass up those stairs. I’ll pick you something, how’s that?” Dale reached up and ran his thumb along Al’s jaw line. “We’ll get through this.”

Dale waited in line at the bar, occasionally glancing over his shoulder towards Gina and Al. When he finally got to the front of the line, he ordered Gina’s martini, a beer for himself and a double white Russian for Al. He figured that would be a good choice for him and strong enough, in a tall glass, to take the edge off.

He’d just gotten the drinks when Chrissie walked in. Dale wasn’t surprised when a cheer went up, several people rushing towards her. In classical Chrissie fashion, she raised one arm and gave an iconic Marilyn Monroe pose. The bright pink strapless dress she was wearing looked as if it had been painted on it was so tight. Dale couldn’t help but smile and shake his head at his sister. She always knew how to make an entrance.

Chrissie spotted Dale and waved. It took her a few minutes to make her way towards the small group of friends, people stopping her along the way to chat. Dale hadn’t even noticed that Erwan-David was behind her until they were within a few feet. Chrissie had the effect of out-shining all those around her.

“Hi everyone,” Chrissie greeted each one of them with a kiss on the cheek.

“Bonsoir, bonsoir,” Erwan-David said, following Chrissie, smooching each person the same way.

Dale was about to ask his sister what she wanted to drink when one suddenly appeared in her hand. She took a big sip and sighed. “Oh, I needed that.”

David-Erwan looked a bit peeved when he had to go to the bar to get his own cocktail. It was kind of cute to see the small man push and shove his way through the dense crowd.

“So, how is everyone?” Chrissie asked cheerily. When no one answered, Chrissie’s face took on a more serious look. “Okay, what’s going on?”

When Dale cut his eyes in Al’s direction, he saw him tilting the white Russian cocktail, almost draining it.
