BLACKWOOD

“Hells bells, Gordon, you couldn’t get through one night without causing an argie-bargie?” Kendric throws up his hands and tears about trying to bring the party back around again. But it’s too late. That little scene with Cat and me pretty much deflated any cheer left in the room.

He orders the staff to cut the music and start cleaning up. About the best he can do is thank everyone for coming and make plans to do damage control next week.

“He’s full of piss now,” laughs Moira. Norval goes after him, and the others just drift off muttering plans to reconvene at the pub in town.

“Well, how else would he be after that, Moira? Tell me.” She looks at me like I’m the one who’s lost my mind.

“Oh, come on, not you too. With this crowd, somebody was bound to get their knickers in a twist. He’ll get over it, and so should you.”

“You got what you wanted, so I guess you’re happy either way. To hell with you.”

I make my way through what’s left of the party, thankfully without having to talk to anyone. I don’t blame anyone, including Kendric, for thinking I’m an arse. I just keep my head down, and when I step out the front door, I see what I’m pretty sure is the back of the livery car Kendric hired for Catriona and her sisters.

The snap of the cool summer night that invigorated me earlier chills me to the bone now. It’s not just that Catriona is in that car driving away from me, that she overheard me destroying what we’d just shared under the moonlight and the promise of what we could have—all that is horrible enough. But the thought that I’ve fucked up so badly here that I might never be able to rectify the situation or get her back nearly does me in.

I was torn in the days leading up to the party. I want this whole skirmish to be squashed, to send Moira back on her way and be done with it all. But I know Moira too well, and I know that no matter what my decision is, she's not going to just walk away. She wants power, something she could never quite collect on her own. If she thinks this story about my father and the Duncans is true, she'll chase it until it kills her. I just thought playing like I was on their side would at least keep them from intervening. It would keep the situation in my hands until I could figure out what to do about it. But what I didn't expect was for Cat to overhear it.

I slog to my Rover like a dead man walking. When I pull up in front of my house, I’ve no recollection of having driven here or how long it’s taken me, I’ve been so lost in the disaster of Kendric’s party.

For once, I dread going inside and being alone. I could call Henry; I know he’d gladly come and talk it out with me.
