I escaped the oppressive atmosphere of my cabin, with my parrot close behind me. Sebastian was standing up at the helm and I paused for a moment to admire that view. His pants weren't anything special compared to the rest of ours but seemed to hug his body, particularly his butt, more than the rest of the crew. Not that I'd been excessively checking out the rears of my crew so maybe it was that I just paid more attention to his. His hair whipped out behind him, black against the baby blue of the sky, and the black shirt he was wearing was open at the neck, showing off a tantalising triangle of tan flesh. There wasn't a speck of stubble on him. Who was giving shaves on this ship, I wondered. It seemed excessively dangerous getting a close shave on heaving seas.

"What's your secret?" I asked as I walked up to him. He startled and looked at me with wide eyes.

"What do you want to know, Captain?" he asked, almost cautiously. I raised an eyebrow.

"Mostly how you keep your hair out of your face with the wind. If I let mine loose just watch it try to strangle me." I stepped in to take the wheel from him, keeping one eye on his face. His relief was evident, even though he tried to mask it. "What secret did you think I was after?"

"Any of them," he said with a graceful shrug. "I like to be an enigma."

"Whatever it is you've done, Sebastian, you can be sure that there's someone on this ship who's done it and twice worse besides."

"I'll remember that," he said with a smile that felt like a warm caress. "I like to keep myself to myself. It's tidier that way. Suits my line of work. I'm a blank canvas. I can be whoever they want me to be."

"A blank canvas? That's selling yourself short, you're like something Da Vinci painted."

"Are you very familiar with the art of Da Vinci?" Sebastian asked, his lip quirking with a smile.

"Couldn't pick his stuff out of a lineup," I admitted cheerfully. "But I know he's famous and that his stuff is valuable."

"If the Caribbean nautical trade ever gets too heated for you, then we could go into art thievery in Paris, or Venice," Sebastian suggested. I laughed. There was a screech and the red parrot landed on my shoulder, fixing his beady gaze on Sebastian. I guess the bird thought he was nice to look at too.

"I could steal a Michaelangelo for..." I trailed off, my throat suddenly tight. It was an old joke between me and Dauntless, stealing a Michaelangelo. I'd stolen countless ugly statues and sculptures and presented them to him, all because I joked that he looked like a Michaelangelo statue. There was nothing to do with a stolen Michaelangelo now, apart from sell it, which suddenly seemed a lot less exciting than my original idea of dressing it up in Dauntless' clothing and leaving it in his cabin in the middle of the night.
