Once we got to the shops Charlotte needed a wee, a drink, another wee and something to eat meaning that after an hour I was no closer to buying anything.

Carrie watched me as she sipped her bottled water while Charlotte sat chatting to a little girl on the next table.

“What?” I snapped, uncomfortable and agitated to find myself under her studious gaze.

“I could ask the same. I get you liked the dress, but you didn’t seem unduly upset until I said it was bigger across the chest.”

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I hissed, dropping my head to the table, hard and loud. Loud enough that it drew the gazes of people nearby.

I felt Carrie’s hands on each side of my head and as she lifted it, I realised she was crouched at my side, looking at me again, concerned.

“I need to buy a dress and a pregnancy test.”

She almost fell back on her arse at that revelation. “Fuck, fuck, fuck, indeed.” Once safely back on her chair she struggled to look at me, then asked, “Is it Seb’s, if you are, I mean?”

I was unsure if I should have been insulted by her question that more than inferred I could be carrying anyone else’s baby. Seb and I had been back together a couple of months now and exclusive so there was no way, if I was pregnant that it could be anyone else’s. Instead of getting mad at my friend, who I knew would support me regardless, I nodded.

“Does he know, have you mentioned it?”

I shook my head, thinking how ridiculous I was not to have suspected before myself. “It was when you said about the dress and your boobs, because, you know.” I pointed towards her tummy. “And I need you not to tell him or Gabe.”

“I won’t lie to Gabe, but I don’t imagine he will ask if you’re pregnant so we should be safe.” She offered a small smile.

“Thanks. And in the event that he does ask if I’m pregnant, you can just laugh, hysterically, not that there is anything amusing in this hideous situation.”

She nodded and then turned practical. “Why do you think you might be?”

“Because I haven’t had a period since we got back together, and I might have been a bit off the last few days.”

“Charlotte, sweetie, let’s go, we need to shop for Bea. Say bye-bye to your new friend,” she told the little girl.
