CHAPTER ELEVEN

The next morning I chose to interview Rufus Mulgrew. The ‘happy’ mage lived in a modest, single-story house outside the city center. The building was comprised of the same red brick and white shutters as every other house on the block. As I approached the door, I checked over my shoulder to see whether Palmer had followed me. I cursed under my breath for thinking of him now. The vampire hadn’t managed to pierce my skin, but he was certainly getting under it.

Rufus answered the door before I even had a chance to lower my hand from knocking. Although he shared Daisy’s coloring, his build was more muscular. Thanks to a pair of black gym shorts and a white tank top, his larger muscle groups were on display.

“Rufus Mulgrew?”

“That’s right. You must be the detective. My sister mentioned you might be paying me a visit soon.”

Despite the muscles, I wouldn’t have considered him attractive until he smiled. He had the kind of smile that seemed to rearrange his facial features.

“I’m Agent Fairfield,” I said, shaking his hand.

“Come in. I’m sorry for the mess. I fully intended to clean today, but I ended up working out instead as a way of dealing with my grief.” He gestured to his gym shorts and tank top. “Haven’t managed a shower yet either. I hope it isn’t a problem. I can open the windows. It’s nice outside.”

“It is.”

He darted to the nearest window and pushed it up. “Can I get you something to drink? I don’t have a huge selection. Water. Gatorade. Protein shakes.” He laughed. “Can you tell I don’t entertain very often?”

“Not like Dottie then.”

He removed his sneakers and kicked them aside. “No, but then who is? Dottie cared more about entertaining than anybody I’ve ever met.”

“I don’t need a drink, but thank you.”

Rufus dropped onto the sofa cushion and peeled off his sweaty socks, tossing them on top of the sneakers. “Have a seat.”

He wasn’t wrong about the mess. The mantel above the fireplace was crammed with knickknacks, although the lone plant seemed to be thriving. There was an empty glass and a plate with crumbs on the coffee table. A stack of men’s fitness magazines rested beside the plate. I wouldn’t have guessed Daisy’s brother would be a gym rat. Then again, my sisters and I had different interests. I liked to read on occasion, but I wasn’t obsessed with books like Elizabeth. And Grace…Well, Grace wasn’t like either one of us.

“How do we do this?” Rufus asked. “You ask questions and I answer them?”

“Pretty much. It should be relatively painless—far less pain than your workout, I bet.”

He cracked another smile and I was once again amazed by the change. No wonder he had a reputation for being happy. I’d smile incessantly, too, if I knew the effect it had on my countenance.

“No pain, no gain, right? Some guys are born with muscles. Some of us have to work for them. I don’t mind, though. Sweat equity builds character. That’s what my dad used to say.
