14. Dolly’s star outside the County Music Hall of Fame and Museum

“I’m sorry, Madam, but we are closed and no one is allowed in,” came the reply.

“Is there any way you might be persuaded to let me just take a quick peek?” I pleaded, taking some notes out of my wallet. (This once worked a treat in an Italian museum).

“We are closed and no one is allowed in,” said the guard more firmly.

“But I am a huge Dolly Parton fan and I really need to see the Opry” was my last, pathetic attempt before Tony revved the car into reverse and we headed back to downtown Nashville.

The sky-blue façade and looped pink neon tube lighting that spells out Dolly’s distinctive signature and butterfly trademark gives Dolly Parton’s Trinkets and Treasures store a distinctive façade in the historic 2nd Avenue District of downtown Nashville. Inside is a visual feast: candy colors on the walls, sparkly costumes in display cases, and the twinkling of necklaces, bracelets, photo frames, and other goodies. Athena and I were entranced. “I’m rather thirsty,” announced Tony and he went off to check out the Wildhorse Saloon next door. Trinkets and Treasures is like Claire’s Accessories for adults. It is cheap and cheerful and promotes Dolly as a brand more than as a singer. There were no CDs on display when we went, though you could buy DVDs of concert performances. Instead, there were Dolly mugs, a red one with “I will always love you,” and a blue one with “Pour myself a cup of ambition.” There were bandanas and buttons, tote bags and posters, with rhinestones and butterflies and, of course, images of Dolly on them. Among these were T-shirts, some of which depicted Dolly, and some with slogans on them: Dumb Blonde (actually Dum BlOnD), Hick, and White Trash (figs. 15 and 16). Who would wear a T-Shirt with White Trash on it, and what would they think they were saying?
