She reached the university campus and looked around in awe. It sure was beautiful. Breathtaking, even. So proud of Maria for getting a scholarship to this beautiful, well-known-and-liked university. Sure, it’s a smaller campus, but that just makes it feel even more wonderful. More like a home. She saw all the beautifully planted palm trees lining the street and looked around for the parking lot that Maria had told her to park in.

There it is! She saw the sign for it and a row of cars forming a line to park there. That must be the right place. Where there are people, there’s something going on.

And so it was: a bustle of people, the women all dressed up in elegant dresses and a few in ballroom gowns, the guys in suits, and then the occasional casual dresser. Martina had to smile. America. The Land of the Free. Here you can even wear jeans to exciting once-in-a-lifetime events. Only Americans can get away with that.

She found a parking space, turned off her car, and logged out of the navigation app that had kindly told her she had just arrived at her destination. She texted Maria, and her phone blinked in reply immediately. Meet us at the entrance, it said in perfect Spanish.

Aw, mija. So smart and bilingual. And about to see her fiancé graduate and commission into the U.S. Air Force. Wow.

Martina grinned, got out of the car, smoothed over her flowery dress, and swapped out of her simple, comfortable ballerina shoes into her dressy white high heels. Those perfectly matched her white dress with the flowers on it. Flowers in different shades of red.

She walked around the car to open the passenger seat and got out her light-red purse, the same shade as the flowers on her dress. She put the four small bags of homemade Venezuelan pastries in it as well as the small, beautifully wrapped gift for Aaron. She quickly checked herself out in the rearview mirror, making sure that her lipstick hadn’t smeared and her curly hair looked fresh, then locked the car.

On her way toward the entrance, she kept an eye out for Maria and her soon-to-be family in-law. She nervously followed the crowd of people, all taller than her—but then, she was used to that. As the crowd moved on, she spotted Maria, Aaron, and the Heikinnens standing right there by the entrance. She took a deep breath, hoping they would like her, and walked toward them.
