Example: Precise Black & White Point Adjustment

Most images should have full contrast, from a rich, maximum black to bright white. However, just as there should be good highlight detail, the density of maximum black should be set precisely so the shadows still retain some density variation. A balance is difficult to achieve just by eye. Levels is excellent for precisely adjusting the image pixels to these values.

1. To create a new Levels Adjustment: click the Levels button in the Adjustments panel.

2. Examine the histogram for your image; ideally, the histogram will cover the full range of tones from black to white. Note which end(s) falls short.
