Chapter Twenty

Kat checks her wristwatch, surprised Antonia is fifteen minutes late. The white Christmas lights and dark wood paneling create a festive and cozy atmosphere, even in the middle of summer. The place is jammed, as she expected. Napi’s is always busy. After uncharacteristically changing her clothes three times before her date, Kat finally settled on white slacks and a black tank top. She sits at the corner table and alternates between people watching and checking the door. As she sips her martini, she tries to pinpoint why she’s so nervous. Then it hits her—it’s been around nine years since she’s asked a woman out on an actual bona fide date. This is also the first time in a long while that she feels comfortable in her own skin and secure enough to take the lead with someone who interests her.

Antonia blows in like a mini-hurricane, immediately ending Kat’s internal musings. She spots Kat and hurries over, accidently knocking into two chairs on her way.

“I’m so, so sorry,” she says, the words coming out in a rush as she sits down across from Kat. Antonia wears a pretty red-and-yellow sundress that sets off her hair and eyes perfectly. The fact that Kat is sitting with one of the most beautiful women in the room isn’t lost on her. “I had some family issues to take care of and everything seems to take twice as long by phone.”

“It’s okay. Take a deep breath. Everything is fine.” Kat’s tone is warm and caring.

Antonia sighs, leaning back in her chair as the tension in her face dissipates. “Yes, you’re right. Relax. I have to tell myself to relax.”

“You look lovely.”

Antonia blushes. “Thanks. So do you.” She looks around the restaurant. “This place is so cool inside. Very different from what I thought it’d look like.”

“That’s why I like it too. That and their food is great.”

The waitress approaches, asking Antonia what she’d like to drink.

“I’ll have a martini too. A little dirty, extra olives please.”

The waitress nods and walks away.

“So,” says Kat.

“So,” says Antonia, smiling.

“How did the rest of your day go? Did you get any writing done?”

“Hardly. After I left the gallery, I decided it was too hot to do anything except get an ice cream cone and take a nap inside. I slept until about six o’clock and then all hell broke loose at home.” Kat notices that every time Antonia mentions home, her brow furrows right down the center as if she’s deep in concentration.

“Is everything okay now?” Kat asks as the waitress delivers Antonia’s martini. “Wait one second. Don’t answer that yet. Mind if I order a couple of apps?”

“No, perfect, go right ahead.”

“Anything you don’t like?”

“Nope, I’ll try whatever.”

“Okay. We’ll have the crab cakes and pita with hummus to start.”

“Terrific. I’ll go put those in and give you time to decide on your entrees,” the waitress says.

“So, you were saying?” Kat asks.

“The truth is, I have two very sick parents that I take care of and while I wanted this trip to write, I also needed some time to myself.
