The worry over his disabled son remained, but it no longer made him incapable of action. He could allow himself to think about Sayoaard in this manner.

His thoughts also turned to Perry Rhodan and the humans. They were like Arkonides, but not. Novaal respected them—and he sensed that Rhodan respected him in return. But he wondered what tied Rhodan to Crest and Thora da Zoltral. Why was Sergh da Teffron so determined to get his hands on the two Arkonides? The Imperium had plenty of other enemies of the regent...

And what would become of the two hundred humans whom Novaal had to bring deeper into Imperium territory on da Teffron’s orders? Nothing good, he suspected.

A decision began to take shape inside him. Eventually, he ordered Toreead, whom he had made his personal servant, to come to him.

After that, he observed the wrestling matches, which took place in parallel in dozens of round arenas, without taking part himself. A great many Naats had signed up, wanting to cleanse their souls in their own way. Even the Keat’ark’s Positronic had found it impossible to plan a tournament system resulting in a single victor for the entire 247th border patrol. Instead, there were countless victors from two-party duels, or from championships made up of spaceship or auxiliary craft crews.

He found it especially interesting that almost an entire league of subordinates had challenged their commander to a wrestling duel. Whatever the superior may have done to his crew, he clearly regretted it by the tenth match. The med robots had their hands full, but most wounds would barely be visible in a few days. Soldiers limped past him or carried their comrades back to the ship.

The wrestling tradition went back to their civilization’s ancient times. Hidden in an abandoned rock valley, Arkonide archaeologists had found cave drawings of duels. All the standard grapples had appeared, from the crotch grip to the arm pull, all roughly scribbled on the bright-yellow rock in charcoal. In other words, what originated from that period was standard wrestling in the classic “Naat-Naator” style, named after their culture’s two cradles of civilization by later generations. Novaal, however, was far more interested in the freestyle variants, which were reserved exclusively for officers.

In standard wrestling, both of the opponent’s shoulders had to be forced to the ground. In freestyle, however, the duel ended only when one of the two opponents tapped out or was knocked out, or if the robot adjudicator interrupted the fight due to mortal danger. Pinning the shoulders didn’t mean victory here, even from a supine position, Novaal had beaten a few foes, and freestyle was pure combat sport, since almost anything was allowed. Punches and kicks, lifts and chokes, even jabs with knees and elbows or ramming with the head. It all made for a truly exciting fight. Only strikes to the eyes and actually killing the opponent were expressly forbidden in the sport version.
