For the next few minutes it looked as if luck was on their side. The breakfast room was empty. Catherine was able to access the computer and determine their location on the spaceship. After a quick glance at a projected map, Bull decided to stay to the left so as not to lose sight of the general direction towards the outer rim of the spacecraft. Unfortunately, they couldn’t print out the map or take it with them in any way, so they both memorized the directions as best they could.

They managed to immediately stun the next Naat who crossed their path. The captured weapon went to Bremm and Winter, who quickly familiarized themselves with its operation. The next group they encountered consisted of two Naats and a robot. The instructions given by Bull proved to be spot on. They used the two combination spotlights to knock out the aliens, while four people pounced on the robots with two metal rods and two screwdriver-like devices from a repair box.

It’s going almost too well, Bull reflected. Hopefully, the other shoe won’t drop.

According to the map they had studied together, they were approaching a section where, with a bit of luck, a small craft was anchored on the outside. They were currently in possession of four combination spotlights, each of which had to be carried and operated by two people. The other members of the group either took care of the transport of the wounded, whose number had already grown to four, or had armed themselves with equipment in order to be able to intervene in the fight if necessary.

Their luck lasted until just before their goal had been reached. Bull and Jan reached a bend. In front of them, across the corridor, three Naats were kneeling, their guns pointed at them. Behind them stood three other Naats, who were aiming at them above their heads.

“Back!”

The last row of fugitives turned around. Some Naats, accompanied by combat robots, were just stepping out of the anti-grav shaft.

“We’re surrounded!” Bull heard a startled cry from behind.

“Damn!” he said. He glanced at Jan for a moment. This is not the place for heroic deeds, said Jan’s gaze. Bull agreed. The Naats looked at them both.

“We surrender!” cried Bull, addressing the Naats as well as his own group.

Jan and Bull got down on their knees together and put the heavy combination gun on the floor. Then they both stood up and raised their hands to the ceiling. Suddenly, Bull heard a hysterical scream behind him.

“They’re going to kill us all!”

The next moment, a beam of energy seized the Naats.

We all wear masks. They protect us;

they make sure that not everyone is aware of our feelings.

But I often wonder if there are really always faces underneath all these masks.
