Chapter 16
V was well aware of the moment her mother fell in love with Mac. After stating his question and pestering her for the next ten minutes until she complied, V finally motioned for her mother to join the group at the bar.
Amy slid onto the stool on the other side of Mac, and V poured her a glass of champagne as well, introducing her mother to the entire group, saving Mac for last.
âYouâre as beautiful as your daughter,â Mac said to Amy. âItâs nice to meet you.â
âHands to yourself, Romeo,â Vic said as he joined them. âYouâve already got one of my women.â
Her motherâs eyes widened when she understood the context of the statement. She lifted her glass and toasted V and then blasted Mac with typical motherly questions.
What did he do? Oh, he owned companies. Where did he live? Oh, a house on the waterway. With every answer Mac provided, her mother slid V a look that begged her not to let Mac slip away.
Someone turned up the music, a few of the patrons began to dance, and V doled out drinks while enjoying the show. That is, until her father asked her mother to dance and the two looked like teenagers.
âGonna catch flies,â Mac said.
She shut her gaping mouth, blown away by the tender way Vic stared down at Amy, and knocked back the last of her champagne like the shot sheâd rather have. âIâm just⦠Whatâs happening?â
Marsali giggled. âRomance. Romance is happening. I love romance,â she said dreamily.
âYou are such a lightweight,â Eliza said, rolling her eyes. âOne drink and sheâs toast.â
Oliver grinned and nodded as he got to his feet.
âCome on, Miss Romance, letâs go show them how itâs done.â
âWe can practice for the wedding!â
V watched as Oliver led his bubbly fiancée to the dance floor and drew her close. Before long, the other men had taken their wives out onto the floor, and Mac sat alone at the bar.
âThe only dancer in the place and she isnât dancing,â he said softly.
Her heart warmed at the look in his gaze and she shrugged. âIâve danced today so Iâm good.â
She winced, wishing sheâd kept the comment to herself. Mac had asked how things had gone earlier, and sheâd managed to avoid answering. As to his statement about the company where sheâd danced⦠âIâm fine. Actually, better than fine. Today was a good day.â She glanced around, uncomfortable with the expression on Macâs face. âI, um, have to take these empties out. Be back in a bit.â
She lifted the bin of empties and headed toward the rear door.
Macâs hands slid over hers at the end of the long bar and he took the bin from her. âThis is about as heavy as you are. Where do you put them?â
âI can carryââ
âWhere do you put them?â
She released the bin and turned, leading the way out the back to where the empties stayed until pickup.
Mac shortened his long strides to match hers, and once his hands were free, he snagged her arm and tugged her to him.
