Emery placed his cell on his desk. “What the fuck?” He

pushed his foot against the edge of his desk, causing his chair to

roll back until it bumped into the wall. Estelle, the sixty-year-old,

who worked in the cubicle next to him, swiveled in her chair. As

the longest standing employee of the agency, she had, to quote

her, ‘seen it all and done even more’. In a gravelly voice, she

addressed Emery. “Problems?”

There was something oddly comforting about the yellow-

toothed, woman with the bee-hive hairdo and retro clothing.

“Actually, yes. Which would you prefer? The one with this kid

whose case is about to blow open or the one where this guy I’m

dating has a serious complex?”

“Oh honey, you already know the answer to that. Dish about

the man, doll. I’m too old to play like you, but young enough to

enjoy the stories.” Estelle leaned back in her chair, attempting to

cross her cellulite laden legs but giving up after a few tries.

Emery slid his chair back to his cubicle with tiny steps of his

feet making him feel even more like a little boy than he already

did under this senior social worker’s penetrating eyes. “Okay, so

I met this guy named Sean. He’s a principal of the school where

this kid on my case load attends. The kid was hospitalized—”

“I said I want to hear about the man, not the kid. Don’t

sidestep a railroader. You’ll lose.”

Emery chuckled. “Okay. I’ll tell you.” He leaned back and

kicked his feet up on his desk.

“Sean,” Emery leveled Estelle with a steady gaze, “has some

serious hang-ups about relationships. He’s been burned a few

times.” It would have been far easier to just tell her Sean was

positive and had a problem with the fact Emery wasn’t, but he’d

made a promise to Sean and didn’t want to break it.

“Well that’s a new one.” Estelle rolled her eyes and shook her

head, causing Emery to feel like he was an inch tall. “Never heard

that before.”

“Okay, I can’t go into specific detail, but he’s got a hang-up

about something and he’s been burned a lot of times for it. I

know that sounds lame, but trust me when I say it’s not a typical

situation. Anyways, I think he’s primed for me to disappoint him

and I don’t know what to do about it.”

Estelle studied him, then leveled Emery with a hard stare.

“Why would you be different?”

“Because I’m not judging him. He’s assuming I’m like

everyone else.”

“That’s not what I asked, baby.” Estelle leaned forward and

placed a hand laden with costume jewelry on his thigh. “I asked,

why would you be different?”

Emery considered her for a moment before answering. “I’m

different because I don’t choose my partners based on anything

but who they are. Money, social class, color, it’s all irrelevant. I

only care about the person.”

“Okay, so you decide whether someone is good enough for

you based on who they are, not what they are.”

“Yeah. What’s wrong with that?” While he heard the petulance

in his voice, he couldn’t bring himself to back down and he

couldn’t deny he wanted the answer.

“Nothin’. Nothin’ at all. But there are a lot of folk out there

who can’t just be themselves right away.
