Chapter Thirteen

Callie read from her notes. The words appeared magically on the screen in front of her thanks to the voice recognition software. Her notes were never perfect the first time, but with some helpful edits by Ariana they soon would be.

The interconnecting door between their offices opened and Greyson leaned against the frame. “Done.”

“Quit bragging.” She skimmed through her notes.

“I’m not. Your notes are always better than mine. You put more detail into them.” Greyson waited until she saved her file and shifted her focus to him. “Did you notice a pattern?”

“With Trina?” Callie reached for her notepad. After flipping to a page, she flattened the notepad on her desk and pointed. “I made a timeline.”

He crossed over to her desk. “According to Ruby’s sister, Hannah, the family got a picture of Trina when she was two.”

“Hannah doesn’t remember Trina having chickenpox at that point but according to Ruby’s old boyfriend, Gus Pruitt, it’s possible that Trina may have had them not long after.”

Callie pointed at a spot in the timeline. “Gus remembers Trina being two. Hannah thinks the first picture they got was just before Trina was two.”

“And the next one didn’t come until she was four.” Greyson tilted his head to read Callie’s notes. “At which point she no longer had dark hair.”

“It was now red,” Callie agreed. “Which is technically possible. I still have questions about the chickenpox though. I know my nieces were vaccinated for that.”

“I’m guessing your nieces had the benefit of regular medical care which might be something Ruby was unable to provide for her daughter at that time,” he pointed out. “But the Trina we know doesn’t have scarring from the chickenpox.”

Callie tilted her head back and forth. “Yeah. I know it’s possible to lighten them or to have them lighten over time.”

“Gus seemed to think the ones on her stomach and face should still show.”

Callie pointed at another spot on the timeline. “We need to know where Trina and her mom lived at around this time.”

“Between the age of two and four.” He glanced at her computer. “You can probably find bills or something, right? If we check the databases.”

“Yeah.” She shifted to face her computer again. “It might take a little while.”

“We need to know if we’re going to unravel this.” He returned to the interconnecting door and leaned against the frame again. “I have my first date with Mary Lou tonight.”

Callie’s hands paused over the keyboard for just a moment before she began typing again. “Me too.”

“Who are you going out with?”

“Floyd Pollard.”

“The used car salesman?”

She shrugged. “You’re the one who wanted a new fleet of cars for Indigo Investigations.”

“I was just kidding.”

She flashed him a smile to show she was too. “I wasn’t planning to ask him for a car on the first date.”

“Are you finding anything?”

She clicked print. The printer behind her desk hummed to life. “She moved around. A lot.”

Greyson waited for the printer to finish then removed the pages. “Arkansas.”

Callie opened another database. “Mississippi.”

Greyson shuffled the pages.
