âPraise to the Lord,â intoned Annas, reciting the first of the Psalms of David used in the Seder. âPraise, O Servants of the Lord. Praise His name, from this time forth and forevermore. From the morning light to the sunset hours, the name of the Lord shall be praised. The Lord is higher than all nations; His glory is above the Heavens. Who is like Yahweh of old, who is enthroned on high, For he raises the poor from the dust, And lifts the needy from the ashes of mourning. He makes the barren one sit in the house, As a joyful mother of many children.â
Caiaphas continued with the next song of the King, âWhen Israel went forth from Egyptâ¦â
Bartemaus poked Silas with his elbow and whispered to him, âDid you hear that? âHe lifts the needy from the ashes of mourning and the poor from the dustâ?â
âWe hear it every Passover,â whispered back Silas.
âYes, but who else but Yeshua is like Yahweh of Old, not to mention Moses and Elijah all rolled in one?â
âBut, Heâs dead. We watched Him when He was hung on the cross.â
âI know. I havenât figured it all out yet.â Bartemaus shook his head, puzzled. âBut I will.â
âShush,â whispered their mother just as their father, Amos, glared at them.
The bowl of water was again brought to the table for ceremonial cleansing. The plate of horseradish and charoseth was placed on the table by the servant who quietly slipped away to fetch the wine for the third cup, the Cup of Redemption. Annas broke the unleavened bread and gave each person a piece. They each one dipped their bread into both of the items on the plate, and then ate of the mixture. The horseradish was bitter and hot. The charoseth was cool and sweet. The former spoke to them of the bitterness of slavery. The latter reminded them of the bricks that were made to build the cities of the Pharaoh.
At this point, the roasted lamb should have been brought to the table with other Passover delicacies for the feast, the Seder meal. And although the servants brought out many lovely dishes of salads and grains, there was no lamb delivered to the table.
When it became obvious to Caiaphas that there was no lamb coming from the spit, he looked about the table confused. He seemed to be the only one who thought this strange that there was no lamb. The truth was that when Caiaphas had returned home late that afternoon, no one had mentioned to him that the lamb was missing. No one explained to him that it had been too late to get, slaughter and prepare another lamb. Besides, they had all reasoned, the lamb was supposed to be a personal sacrifice after living with them. But Caiaphas had arrived home wet, muddy, bleeding from his hand, and in a foul mood. No one had wanted to inform him of the missing dinner item. Everyone had assumed that someone else had probably told him before now.
