Cook basic meals

If you can get children to choose jobs, great. Don’t worry if they choose things they can’t do on their own. Do them together and delegate manageable activities. A useful rule is to treble the amount of time the task would take you and allow that much time initially. Praise every attempt as this makes pre-teens confident, faster and more accurate.

When children do chores, reward them. Money works a treat. Before you throw your hands up in horror, think about the alternative: giving children pocket money every week and working as their slave. We suggest giving children weekly wages with a payslip of what they have earned for which jobs. This is a powerful reinforcer and also teaches them where there’s room for improvements.
