The name of Parshwanath who attained nirvana from here appears as the 23rd Tirthankar in this list. However, nine other Tirthankars from the same list had also attained Nirvana from this mountain. This process is continuing. The Parasnath is referred to as ‘Shikharji’ (which stands for the venerable peak and Jain temples on the mountain top). This is also known as “Sammet Shikhar” (peak of concentration).

The Importance of Parasnath

Parasnath is important for both Jains and the Santhals. The details are explained below.

A) For Jains

Jain Tirthankars are religious sages whom they worship as gods. More than 20 Tirthankars have attained Nirvana on the Parasnath hills. For everyone of them there is a Gumti (Tonk) and a shrine on the hills. The climb to the Mountain begins from Madhuban. A round trip from Madhuban to the temple at the mountain top and back entails a journey of 44 kms on foot. It takes about 12 hours through a shorter route. The oldest temple was constructed in 1775. This temple was partly replaced and a new temple was constructed but the idol in the temple is very old.
