Chapter

Thirty-Six

The larger group shattered into many pieces as I led Eleseld, Imorith, Nymyxiah, and Xanali to a small meeting room. Of course, Zeerah padded after me as well, Munch clinging to her back like the strangest cowboy ever.

We settled into the small meeting room. The books and papers the women had been using lay scattered across the table.

Xanali started things off. “We have been working hard on trying to glean information from Eleseld’s visions. It is no small task. She has meticulously recorded them and there are many.”

Eleseld smiled at the senior sister. The two of them had hit it off right away when they met, probably because of their shared talents for visions. I knew Imorith’s mother didn’t really have anything to do with the Sodality, but even so, it lightened my heart that the two women with such different backgrounds could be friends.

“Yes,” Eleseld said. “I recorded the visions as I had them over many years. I am afraid there is no organization to how they are laid out and how they interconnect with each other. Much of my time has been spent reading and reacquainting myself with what I have seen.

“Which is where the wonderful sister Adrisse Clearpond comes in. There is an herb that seers have used for centuries, called the darsa flower. Or, more correctly, the leaves of the darsa flower plant. It does nothing for the ability itself, but it helps to focus the mind, recall things thought lost. Of course, it works for all people, magical ability or not, but for seers, it is very important.

“The problem is that is it so rare, I have not seen a leaf for more than thirty years. Even the Sodality has little, if any.”

“The last I’d seen was eight years ago,” Imorith said. “Without magic, it was not sought after by seers, but anyone who wanted to heighten their concentration and provide themselves with an advantage regarding their memories would snatch it up if any came to be available. We had thought the plant extinct.”

The Paragon’s mother nodded. “It is a temperamental herb, one which is not easily cultivated. In any case, there are apparently some of the plants here in the Dreadlands, near your village. Adrisse was kind enough to prepare some for me. It helped to focus my mind.”

“We had Eleseld take the darsa flower leaf and search her memories for certain details,” Xanali continued. “We discussed it beforehand, prepared her carefully, and recorded what we found. Imorith was kind enough to draw the results.”

Imorith slid some papers across the table as her mother explained them.

“Visions are incredibly complex and detailed at times. When I have one, I endeavor to record it as accurately as possible, but the most important thing is to preserve the feeling, my instinctual grasp of the meaning. Using the herb, I captured some of those details.

“When I originally saw the portals, my concern was more the overall picture, monstrous figures coming through them, impending doom clouding my understanding. This time, I paid attention to other things.
