Chapter Twelve
Shane was waiting in the lunchroom of Elkhead Hall. It was a couple hours before lunch, so they had the entire room to themselves.
“What should I wear?” Jamari asked.
“I think the lounge pants are a good bet,” Shane replied. “I’m wearing a pair as well. The only thing to add would be a sweater jacket, since the temperature has been on the cool side these days. Grab one from your room, and we’ll meet back at the entryway in five.”
Jamari was back before Shane. He looked out at the mid-October scene, remembering all the things he had learned during the daily tours with Matthew. The salmon would be returning any day now, if they hadn’t already. It had been a few days since he had thought to ask about them.
When Shane joined him, they donned their jackets and stepped out into the brisk air. There was no rain, but the level of water in the stream was still up, not much up from the summer levels, but a little higher after the last rain. There were still some workers on the North Steppes working the grain lands, preparing the soil for the winter, maybe even putting down some winter wheat. He looked over at Shane as he trudged beside him. “What, exactly, is the doctor going to be looking for in this check-up?” he asked.
“It’s more than I can describe in the few minutes we have before we get there, and you’ll find out for yourself. Like many of the other things you’re going through, others have gone through it before. I’m here mostly to help you feel comfortable with the process. Do you trust me enough to let me be a part of your exam?”
Jamari put his hand on Shane’s shoulder as they continued the trek. “Of course I trust you. I even asked that you be allowed to come over with me before I knew that it was already planned that way. I’m glad for everything we’ve shared over the last couple of weeks. I’m glad that it’s you who gets to guide me through this portion of The Rites.”
They walked along for a bit longer in companionable silence before Jamari spoke again. “None of that means that I’ll stop being curious, though. I hope you’ll always let me ask my strings of questions. You know I always have some, and you know I’m always going to ask!”
Shane put an arm around Jamari’s shoulders as they reached the top of the steps leading to the main entry to Milltown Hall. “I love hearing your questions. I don’t always have answers, but the questions I don’t have the answers to are the questions that seem to mean the most to both of us. They’re questions I probably should have thought to ask before. I remember when I first went to Elkhead Hall, and I asked Rodney a question that he couldn’t answer. He told me that one of the best parts about teaching is that the teacher gets to learn as a part of the process.
