Samuel nodded. It would be nice if Aldon staggered to the shop before ten to help him, but since his marriage, he seemed to prefer lingering at home with his wife. Not that Samuel blamed him.

Outside the club, he and Jude waited for the carriage. There were so many things he wanted to say to Jude, but not a single one was possible. Samuel thought his heart would break.

Safely inside the carriage, they travelled in silence for a while. Jude’s gloved hand suddenly moved into his.

“Thank God,” Samuel whispered.

“Wait,” Jude murmured, not that they could be heard over the sound of the horse clip-clopping at an even, steady pace. The sound worked to soothe Samuel’s jangled emotions.

He felt exhilarated at the contact with Jude, trying not to imagine them hanging from nooses outside the Old Bailey. He had thought he could live with his heart full to bursting with love for Jude, but now he didn’t think he could.

Jude’s voice pierced the silence. “Samuel, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” He shook his head. “I had a wonderful evening.”

“I would like to see your paper hearts. Do you perhaps have time to show me?”

Time? Samuel couldn’t speak for a few moments. All my time is yours. Take. Take it all.

They pulled up outside the shop, Jude withdrawing his hand from Samuel’s grasp.

Samuel invited Jude inside.

“What a wonderful display,” Jude said. “I must buy Valentines for my mother and sister.”

Samuel wouldn’t mention that he’d seen him outside earlier that day, looking at the shop window. It would be impolite, no, foolish to do so. Jude, who hadn’t ventured in, had seemed haunted by grief earlier in the day. Now there was lust in those same, spectacular eyes.

Inside the shop, he closed the door.

Jude moved right over to the worktable as Samuel turned on the lights.

“This feels like a very nice place to spend your days in,” Jude said.

“Oh, it is. Very comfortable.”

Jude turned to him, a Valentine in his hand.
