The streets of DC were no longer bustling with working people and tourists or discussing the great political dilemma of the day. There were no blaring horns or sounds of passing protestors. No Hail to the Chief or flapping of flags in the afternoon breeze. In its place were the sounds of nightmares—screams so shrill they pierced the eardrums, and blood that seeped down the storm drains of the vacant streets. Abandoned cars were left with doors wide open, their occupants lying dead and mangled on the warm asphalt just a few feet away.

The General, however, was not going down like that. He was a badass and would continue to lead his country to victory, no matter what the cost. Sneaking quietly toward the Mall, the General led a ragtag group of survivors in and out of the shadows and alleys, keeping them calm and alert like troops moving through the Vietnamese jungles. There were a few secretaries and several police officers who followed the general without reservation as he guided them through the war-torn wasteland the Capitol had become.

They dipped around the corner and into a small alley, everyone lining up against the wall. The general glanced down the street and turned back, checking his gun. “I need everyone to conserve bullets. I know right now it’s easy to be trigger-happy, but you have to keep your wits. Not only do we not want to add to the carnage by accidentally shooting one of our own, but I also have only so many special metal rounds.”

Everyone agreed, and they hurried along until they were a block from the Mall, stopping in their tracks as three demons came out of a looted store. One was carrying a severed head, one a candy bar, and the third a stack of Kung Fu DVDs. That one was eating a human calf like a turkey drumstick. The demons stopped and looked at them, dropping their goods and beginning to snarl.

Two of the police officers stepped up beside the general, who looked at them and nodded. “Aim for the forehead, and use only one bullet if possible. On my count. One, two, shoot.”

Their guns went off as the demons leapt toward them and they hit the ground and writhed dramatically before turning to dust. One of the cops glanced at the Reflecting Pool just a couple of blocks distant from them. “What the hell?”

Brushwood looked up to see a giant swirling portal . A gigantic demon stepped through and glanced up and down the grassy expanse. It was Baal, and he did not look happy. Brushwood hissed, “This is not good. It’s a leader of the demons. One of them, anyway.”

Baal’s head snapped forward, and he stared directly down the street at the general. Putting his fingers to his lips, he let out a high-pitched whistle to call a wave of snarling fiends, then directed them to head straight toward the group before returning through the portal. Brushwood put his hand out to back the group up.
