CASCADING CHANGE

The hierarchy theory in ecology stresses the control exerted by large, slow processes. In this view, slow, broad variables constrain, restrict, and dominate: for instance, geology and climate dictate vegetation in an area. “That’s true, and it is part of panarchy,” Gunderson says. “But there are times when the fast and the small cascade to overcome those controls. Panarchy is a more symmetrical theory.”

In panarchies, transformational change can be generated from below or from above. At the same time, larger, slower levels can act to reinforce and sustain the panarchy. Two critical types of change that occur between levels are “revolt” and “remember”.
